Rush 'still want to play fast guitar music'

Rush have stuck to their principles of making fast guitar music in their long time together as a band.

Geddy Lee, the bass guitar player and lead singer in Canadian group Rush, has explained the band have not changed their musical aims much since first forming back in the late 1960s.

He told the Guardian he had met up with Alex Lifeson when the pair went to school in Toronto, where they both discovered a shared passion for rock and roll and playing the guitar.

"We also both wanted to play really fast," said the bassist.

"That was really important. We wanted to play stuff that was hard to play. We're not so different now."

Rush released their first album in 1974, with now-legendary drummer Neil Peart joining the group soon afterwards as a replacement for original member John Rutsey.

The band are set to tour the UK during May and will be taking their range of musical instruments with them as they cross Britain.

Lee uses Fender Jazz Basses, including one special signature model, while Lifeson has a number of Gibson Les Pauls in his arsenal, along with an original Gibson 355 stereo.

Meanwhile, Peart plays Roland V-Drums, as well as using the manufacturer's XV 5080 samplers and V-Cymbals.
