Rushworth's, The Beatles and research

Research into the history of a music store that sold Paul McCartney his first guitar is set to go underway.

The history of a music store that changed the life of a young Paul McCartney forever is being researched in a fascinating three-year study at the University of Leeds.

When he was a 14-year-old teenager with dreams about making music, McCartney's dad bought him a trumpet, the BBC reported.

However, as brilliant as it was, the man that would go on to form one of the greatest bands the world has ever known was keen on playing an instrument while singing.

Lucky for the future Beatles star, the owner of Rushworth's, where the trumpet came from, was more than happy for the youngster to swap it for a guitar.

The store, which was set up in 1828 by a pipe organ builder going by the name of William Rushworth, eventually closed in 2002, unable to compete with big businesses.

Now its history and contribution to the city of Liverpool is going to be examined.

Jonathan Rushworth, the great-great grandson of William Rushworth, told the BBC that the most poignant thing about his family business was that it lasted five generations – most tend to stay in the family for three generations.

"My grandfather built up a very fine collection of antique musical instruments in the 1920s including 15 instruments from the 1500s," he remembered.

"There was a piano that was built in 1800, which Beethoven had played regularly, and people used to come in and kneel down and kiss the piano."

The university is appealing to anyone who has a unique story to tell of Rushworth's to come forward.
