Shakespeare's sonnets get music backing

William Shakespeare's sonnets get a musical feel this year.
Celebrating his work this year
Shakespeare's famous sonnets are to undergo a radically new interpretation through the power of music.

This year will see the UK host the World Shakespeare Festival, which is celebrating the playwright's contribution to the arts and his lasting legacy on the world. This musical effort is part of that festivity.

Shakespeare's sonnets, which total 154, will be played alongside new music created using Elizabethan instruments, reported the Associated Press.

Stars like Eliza Carthy, a talented folk singer and multi-instrumentalist, are taking part, using their powerful voices to bring new hidden depths to the bard's mesmerising poetry.

They will be supported by expert musicians who will put down their modern instruments and pick up lutes, a gigantic instrument known as a theorbo and a 16-string cello.

The news provider reported that the idea came from Robert Hollingworth, a renaissance music expert.

A sonnet is defined as a being a poem that is made up of 14 lines and usually in iambic pentameter.

The first two lines of the introductory sonnet read: "From fairest creatures we desire increase, that thereby beauty's rose might never die.
