Sharkey hails the power of music

Music is good for Britain's cultural and economic wellbeing, according to Feargal Sharkey.

Writing in the Guardian, the former Undertones frontman said there is something "intrinsically good" about music.

Indeed, he stated that it can offer "intangible" social and cultural benefits that are beyond simple measurement.

For instance, he said businesses such as hoteliers, tent sellers and service providers can enjoy a financial boost from gigs and festivals.

The Derry-born singer has therefore called on the government to make sure it continues to invest in the arts, even in the current economic climate.

"Music is powerful and it has a deep and significant impact on our national wellbeing and identity," he commented.

Earlier this year, Sharkey joined then-culture secretary Andy Burnham to promote the value of exposing young people to the arts.

The pair were opening a government-funded rehearsal space in Liverpool when Mr Burnham picked up an electric guitar to perform an impromptu version of The Undertones' classic hit Teenage Kicks.
