Shure SM57 Celebrates 50 Years In The Music Industry

Shure SM57

The trusty Shure SM57 microphone is 50-years-old, this year! In this time, the '57 has been on many legendary albums as both a snare mic and on guitar cabs while finding favour from everyone from the President of the United States to The Pope.

The iconic microphone is still one of the stalwarts in terms of modern day recording in a variety of capacities for a clean, professional sound that many use as a go to option for everything from guitar amplifiers to vocals.

Studio engineer Thom Panunzio, who worked with John Lennon, said that this was the microphone of choice for The Beatles frontman:

"John Lennon would only ever sing or talk into a '57. He would not use anything else. In the few years I was lucky enough to work with him I never saw his voice amplified into anything except a 57."

Thom Panunzio, who has also worked with U2, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones added:

"If someone said to me you can only use one mic to record a band, it would without doubt be a 57 for me."
