Sir Edward Heath's home and music instruments up for sale

Sir Edward Heath's home is to be put up for sale.
Great deals on musical instruments

Sir Edward Heath's Arundell home and all its contents are to be sold after trustees said they can no longer afford to keep it running.

Sale of the former prime minister's home in the Cathedral Close at Salisbury, which opened to the public in 2008, has been accepted by the Charity Commission.

In the three years since it opened, the home, which was left by Heath in his will with specific instructions for it to be used by the public, has been visited by some 30,000 people.

However, despite its popularity as a tourist attraction and museum, the Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation said that it had not been a profitable enterprise, and has in fact been losing money.

The lifelong bachelor and Conservative MP, who passed away in 2005 aged 89, had amassed a personal collection of musical instruments, books, paintings and political papers making the Wiltshire home a rich source for arts and culture, history and politics.

Heath, who became one of the most influential Tory politicians of the 20th century, came from modest beginnings having been born to a carpenter and a maid. He was defeated by Margaret Thatcher in the 1975 Conservative Party leadership contest.
