An actress who grew up playing the saxophone and violin has rediscovered her love of music thanks to her latest role.

Nicole Sullivan is required to play the guitar when performing as Rita in the TV sitcom Rita Rocks, which tells the story of a suburban mother who wants to form a garage band.

This, she said, has rekindled her interest in playing musical instruments and led to her learning to play the guitar out of hours.

Making Music magazine has hailed the actress as an example to people who either do not play an instrument or have let their hobby slide over the years.

"It's never too late to pick up an instrument and start making music," it commented.

Nicole added that music "makes us better people" and "rounds us out" in a very important way.

This comes shortly after the National Association of Music Merchants suggested that playing a musical instrument could be good for a person's mental health, as it can stave off conditions such as stress and depression.
