Snoop Dogg to rap Glastonbury

Snoop Dogg is set to play the Glastonbury Festival this summer.

The rapper could follow in fellow hip-hop star Jay-Z's footsteps to appear at the music event after UK immigration recently lifted a four-year ban on him entering the country - which was put in place following an argument he and his entourage got into with officials at London's Heathrow Airport - sparking the interest of the festival's promoters.

Michael Eavis - who owns Worthy Farm, in Pilton, Somerset, where the world famous event takes place and recently handed over the main organisation of it to his daughter Emily - said: "She's a bright girl and she is very keen on Snoop Dogg doing the show, so we want him.

"Her real claim to fame is booking Jay-Z. She came up with the idea, so I phoned his manager. At the end of a 40-minute chat he said Jay-Z would do the show, and the rest is history."

Jay-Z's headline slot at Glastonbury in 2008 proved controversial among many rock fans, with outspoken former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher criticising the decision.

He said: "I'm sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance. Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go, 'Kylie Minogue?' I don't know about it.

"But I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

Ticket sales that year were slow and on the eve of the festival it was announced around 3,000 tickets were left, leaving it in danger of not selling out for the first time in 15 years. A number of reasons were given for this including poor weather on previous years and the number of older acts on the bill.

Despite the controversy Jay-Z went on to play a triumphant set, which he opened by playing a snippet of Oasis song 'Wonderwall'.

The festival sold out in 2009 and is a sell-out for this year which will be headlined by U2, Muse and Stevie Wonder.
