Spotify receives first blow after label announces it's pulling out
The online music software company Spotify has received its first big blow with the news that the record label Century Media is pulling out.
With a roster of stars including Architects, Napalm Death, Lacuna Coil and Iced Earth, it is a bold move that goes against the current technological trends dominating the music industry.
In a statement the label said that while everyone appreciated the benefits and possibilities that new technology is bringing to music and fans, it felt that "Spotify in its present shape and form isn't the way forward".
It said: "The income streams to the artists are affected massively and therefore that accelerates the downward spiral, which eventually will lead to artists not being able to record music the way it should be recorded.
"Ultimately, in some cases, it will completely kill a lot of smaller bands that are already struggling to make ends meet."
It added that it believed that Spotify was a great tool to discover new music and that people shouldn't be dissuaded in using it.
A month on from launching its service in America, Spotify has signed up an amazing 1.4 million users.
