Spotify signs deal with Universal Music Group
The online music software company Spotify has signed a licensing deal with Universal Music Group to stream songs in its catalogue.
This now means that Spotify has secured deals with most of the biggest record labels in the US.
It has yet to secure a deal with Warner Music Group.
This deal means that the European-based company could be poised to launch its services to the US market, which could prove to be very lucrative.
Spotify were the original pioneers of online music streaming, which allowed European-based customers the option of listening to free music that was interjected with advertisements between songs or a paid subscription service without the adverts.
It is believed that it will be offering a similar monthly subscription service in the US.
This move signals the latest in a number of developments at Spotify as it seeks to widen its scope and reach.
It was rumoured recently that it would be joining forces with Facebook to launch a new service within the social networking site.
Speaking to Forbes, a Spotify spokesperson said: "We have a Facebook integration. We're continuously working with them to make that as good as it can be. But that’s the extent of our relationship."
