Stars of music protest against Grammy cuts

Stars from the music industry have banded together to protest against cuts to categories at the Grammys.

Some of the biggest music stars in the industry have got together to protest against changes proposed by organisers of the Grammy Awards.

Electric guitar player Carlos Santana, piano player Herbie Hancock, and acoustic guitar player Paul Simon are leading the charge against the cutting of 30 categories at the prestigious awards.

Some of the categories up for the chop include contemporary blues, Native American, Hawaiian, and Latin jazz. Some have viewed it as an attack on "ethnic music".

The group of musicians have argued that the changes were made without them even being consulted, which as academy members they believe is implied.

In a letter to Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, Simon wrote: "I believe the Grammys have done a disservice to many talented musicians by combining previously distinct and separate types of music into a catch-all of blurry larger categories."

He added that such artists "deserved" the recognition they got with these separate acknowledgements.

Mr Portnow countered by saying the musicians had been consulted, leaving the situation unresolved.

The first ever Grammy Awards ceremony was held in 1959. Sir Georg Solti, a Hungarian-British composer has won the most ever Grammys: 31 in total.
