Sting has admitted that touring the world and keeping his carbon footprint fairly low is difficult.

Bass guitar player Sting has admitted it is hard to do his job without harming the environment.

The former Police frontman, who is also a prominent environmental campaigner, recently travelled the world with his old band on an extensive reunion tour.

However, he admitted that it is difficult for working musicians to keep their carbon footprint low.

As a result, Sting is taking various steps to offset his emissions, such as demarcating an area of land in the Amazon rainforest the size of Belgium.

Speaking to BBC2's Newsnight programme, he commented: "I've tried to ameliorate my carbon footprint which is admittedly large.

"But none of us are blameless in this."

Despite this, he said celebrities have become an "amusing red herring" for the media who want someone to blame for climate change.

Sting is currently campaigning to prevent a hydro-electric dam from being constructed in Brazil, as it could harm parts of the rainforest.

The musician recently released his ninth solo album If On A Winter's Night, which features his interpretations of seasonal lullabies and carols.
