Sting speaks out against The X Factor
Bass guitar player Sting has slammed The X Factor for stifling originality in music.
The former Police frontman, whose hits include Roxanne and Every Breath You Take, said contestants are not being encouraged to establish their own sound and style.
As a result, he does not believe the current crop of singers are likely to have a successful career in the music industry.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Sting said: "It is a soap opera which has nothing to do with music.
"In fact, it has put music back decades."
The musician also criticised the judges, saying they have no recognisable talent apart from self-promotion.
Sting added that real musical talent can be found in Britain's pubs and clubs.
However, he warned that many of these venues are currently being closed down on a daily basis.
Sting, whose real name is Gordon Sumner, was speaking after the release of his ninth solo album If On A Winter's Night, which features his interpretations of seasonal lullabies and carols.Posted on 12 Nov 2009 10:13 to category : Band / Celebrity News
