Students busy banging on African drums

Students are to benefit from new African drums, which were made possible with money from a combined grant.

Students at a school have responded positively to a new batch of African drums, which were bought using money donated to them.

A total of 18 African drums, including djembes and tubanos, were an instant success for the students of Lancaster High School, reported the Lancaster Gazette

Money from Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and the Kinder Morgan Foundation totalled $6,800, an investment that showed how important the instruments are going to be for the school.

"We've never had this many instruments and this high quality of instruments," Cathy Brown, a vocal music teacher at the school, told the news provider.

"When junior high kids get to put hands on instruments they've never seen before, it makes it special."

The move for the drums came after Ms Brown saw a positive reaction to similar instruments last year.

According to the teacher, they appear to bring students together and she remarked that when the students get their hands on them they are excited and enthusiastic about playing them.

"With some of the activities, it involves playing different rhythms at the same time and synchronizing rhythms," she told the news provider.

"And it goes beyond just music making. It's very healthy when people get together and drum. It's shown to lower blood pressure and be a joyful experience."

A djembe is a skin covered drum that is played with the hands. A tubano is an instrument that is said to have an Afro-Cuban influence in its construction and sound.
