Supergrass' email split
Supergrass split up via email.
The 'Pumping On Your Stereo' group shocked fans by announcing they were disbanding out of the blue last April, and frontman Gaz Coombes has given more insight into the reasons behind the split, revealing it was he who suggested that they part in an email.
Gaz exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "There were a lot of arguments at the end, but I think we all knew it was the right thing to do, because we weren't connecting. There's no point pushing through something mediocre.
"I just sat down one night and just wrote an email out to everyone, saying we should call it a day and I kind of want to put my effort into something that I'm going to get immediate reward from and excitement.
"I didn't feel like we were challenging each other in the right way, or things just weren't coming out the way they should."
Supergrass - which also included Gaz's keyboardist brother, Rob Coombes, drummer Danny Goffey and bassist Mick Quinn - split up at a time when many other 90s Britpop groups from the same era, such as Ocean Colour Scene, Suede, Pulp and Shed 7, were reforming - but Gaz said he can't see any reason for his former band to get back together in the future.
He added: "I can't speak for other bands and why they get back together, I'm sure they have perfectly valid reasons for doing it - even if that's just to get a couple of million each or whatever - but I want to leave Supergrass the way we were and for people to remember us for what we did.
"I don't want to soil over that by entertaining any idea of reforming."
Gaz is presently putting the finishing touches to his as-yet-untitled debut solo album, which is expected to be released before the end of the year.
