Taylor Swift's song for Kanye

Taylor Swift felt it was personally "important" for her to write a song about Kanye West.

The US singer was upstaged when accepting the Best Female Video trophy at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) by Kanye, who stormed the stage, grabbed her microphone and ranted about how he felt Beyonce Knowles should have won instead.

The incident caused international outcry and left Taylor shocked and upset, and she felt she needed to address the issue on her latest album 'Speak Now', although didn't want to portray herself as "complaining" in the song.

She told NYMag.com: "I think a lot of people expected me to write a song about him. But, for me, it was important to write a song to him.

"It doesn't really add anything good if I start victimising myself and complaining about things.

"And there was a lot that went down backstage that I will always be thankful for, and the fans in the subway know exactly what happened that night.

"I feel everything. I've never had this thick skin that can't be... It's not like I am bulletproof in any sense of the word."

Kanye - who has a history of storming awards show stages to air his views - has since apologised to Taylor and said he had to re-assess his career after the event.

He said last week: "Most people will be like, 'I guess it's O.K. Beyonce's video didn't win.' That's not me. After the MTV thing I quit doing music. I had to get back into the world's grace.

"I went to Japan, Hawaii, to get away. I thought I was going to give it all up. It's only through divine intervention that I am here today."

Taylor's album 'Speak Now' is released on October 22.
