The 7 Best Instruments For Children Under 7

Choosing an instrument for your child
Choosing an instrument for your child

Many parents want to encourage their child to take up an instrument early on in life. Music can be a fun and rewarding activity for children but knowing where to start can be tricky. Here are our top picks for ideal starter instruments for children under 7.

Recorder - Many children start out playing the recorder and lessons are often available in schools. The recorder is a good lead into other woodwind instruments and is physically easy for smaller children to hold and play. A child can play full songs that they recognise on a recorder almost straight away.

It is also a good entrance way into learning music notation. Recorders are also great value instruments with entry level models starting from as little as £1.99 - Descant Recorder with Cleaning Rod.

Keyboard - Keyboards are simple and fun instruments for children to play. Many modern keyboards have inbuilt teaching features which can help children learn. They are considered a great starter instrument for building a solid backing in musical theory as the notes are visually displayed clearly for the child.

Many keyboards have a lot of different voices which not only make playing the instrument more fun but help children learn how other instruments sound. Keyboards also have the added benefit over acoustic pianos as they come with volume knobs and headphones for silent practice! The light up keys on the MK-3000 Key-Lighting Keyboard are a great learning tool.

Piano - Keyboard and piano skills are considered some of the most transferable and useful for a successful musical hobby or even career. Whilst keyboards are usually more affordable, there are specialist digital pianos available for children such as the Korg tinyPiano.

Drums and Percussion - Whilst some children may be naturally receptive to harmony, others may be more attuned to rhythm. An infant drum kit is usually suitable for children between the ages of 3 and 6.

Kids Percussion - is a great alternative to the full drum set for children who want to explore rhythm. Percussion for children can include drums such as Congas, Bongos and Cajons as well as hand percussion like cabasas, maracas and shakers plus percussion sets. Many percussion sets are used in schools for group play or workshops.

Junior Guitar - Many children are naturally drawn to the guitar because of the instrument's huge presence in popular culture. A Junior Classical Guitar is ideal for children because of the smaller body and softer strings. The guitar can sometimes be a bit too big for very young children however so it is always best to try the instrument for size. The Ukulele can also be a great alternative or lead into the guitar. This instrument has an even smaller body and less strings. It's a fun instrument that's becoming increasingly popular lately.

Violin - Violins come in very small sizes making them easier for small children to play. Going right down to 1/16 sized children as young as 3 have be known to play the violin! The instrument provides a good grounding for classical music, learning musical notation and music theory.

Finally, here are our top tips for buying an instrument for your child:

  • Allow the child to look at and play a mixture of instruments to see what they seem most drawn to
  • Don't spend too much money at first until you are sure it will be a long term commitment
  • Don't put too much pressure on your child - fun, exploration and creativity are key
  • Ask for advice regarding sizing if needed
  • Singing is also a great way to encourage children musically
