The Velvet Underground launch lawsuit for banana image
Now seen as one of the most iconic images in music, the banana, which appears on the record The Velvet Underground & Nico, is something corporate organisations have been interested in for a long time.
Although the band is no longer together, some of its former members have banded together to prevent it being used on covers for iPads, iPhones and other similar devices, Reuters reported.
It comes after they found out, through stories in a newspaper that the Andy Warhol Foundation had actually agreed to license the banana design.
The former bandmates see the image as theirs, tantamount to representing The Velvet Underground in a pictorial way.
However, the image has never been copyrighted, making it a contentious issue that will ultimately be settled in the courts.
The news provider reported that in the lawsuit, the former members describe the banana image as a "symbol, truly an icon of The Velvet Underground".
"The symbol has become so identified with The Velvet Underground ... that members of the public, particularly those who listen to rock music, immediately recognize the banana design as the symbol of The Velvet Underground," the complaint added.
