The ukulele makes a comeback
The ukulele is making a surprise comeback with sales of the music instrument showing a massive rise in the past year, according to new research.
A survey of 180 music shops conducted by the Music Instrument Retain Conference (MIRC) discovered that 42 per cent of respondents reported back that the ukulele had been the fastest growing music instrument over the last year.
Some of the reasons cited for the newfound popularity of this sidelined music instrument vary from the relatively cheap price, which averages at around £20, to the work performed by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, which has brought wider attention to the instrument thanks to their performances at a number of music festivals.
Ronnie Dungan, spokesman for the MIRC, said that the sudden popularity ukulele was a bit of a "phenomenon".
He added: "They're easy to get hold of, cheap to buy and more straightforward to learn than a lot of instruments. It’s encouraging people of all ages to take up an instrument for the first time, which is fantastic because there’s nothing more fun and rewarding."
Eddie Vedder, from the American rock band Pearl Jam, recently released a solo album called Ukulele Songs. When asked why he chose the instrument, the electric guitar player replied that it was "an activist instrument".
