The violin in the digital age

A classical music instrument is being reinvented in the digital age through the power of technology.

A violin played by Mari Kimura is "hooked" up to a computer through motion tracking sensors on a glove she wears on her bow hand, reported NY1.

This revolutionary software allows the musician to explore deeper sounds and complex digital relationships, which is an evolution of her ground-breaking "subharmonic" sounds.

Speaking to the cable TV station, Kimura said that the sensors were very responsive, which meant, quite literally, the sky is limit with what she can do musically.

She explained: "I can assign to turn the graphics on or I can clone myself, and the funny part is when you start cloning yourself you get affected by it, so you don't know who you are anymore. So, that's the kind of musicality I like to explore."

At a recent performance at the Bohemian National Hall in New York City, the violinist demonstrated the possibilities of this new musical frontier.

During one piece, her bow strokes controlled an animated butterfly that transformed into various shapes, and in another performance, a duet with cello player Dave Eggar, the computer was able to change the sounds of both instruments.

Mari Kimura first came to fame with her pioneering development of the bowing technique of subharmonics, which allowed her to play the violin a "full octave below the low G".
