Tinnitus Awareness Week 2014

Tinnitus Awareness Week, 3rd - 9th February
Tinnitus Awareness Week, 3rd - 9th February
It's Tinnitus Awareness week from the 3rd to the 9th February, but what is tinnitus and how can it be prevented?

Tinnitus affects at least one in ten people in the UK, that's 6.3 million people!

What is tinnitus? Put simply, it's a ringing in your ears. It can have a changing pitch and volume, and can be cause by a number of things, including exposure to loud noise. It can take effect at any age and can severely affect sleep and concentration, as well as interrupting daily life.

Download the mp3 file below to listen to examples of how tinnitus can sound.

Drummer Craig Blundell has said, "It is crazy how many drummers play around the world and how many don't wear plugs." It's not just limited to drummers, tinnitus is a risk for everyone who enjoys music. It's as important to protect your hearing at live events, when jamming in your bedroom and when mixing.

In an interview with Rock Hard Magazine, Devin Townsend has said, "If you don't wear earplugs, your ability to hear those nuances that you want other people to connect with as emotional experiences that you're trying to represent through your music ... it's not gonna happen. Protect yourself, protect your loved ones, protect your investment. Wear earplugs."

It's not just exposure to loud noises that can damage your hearing, but it's one of the main associations. There are a few simple ways you can prevent damage to your hearing.

Use a set of earplugs - There are many types of ear protection available, from ear plugs of varying types and sizes to isolation headphones, great for protecting kid's hearing.

Step away from the speakers - It might sound a bit obvious, but try to avoid standing near the speakers when you're at a gig. Not only will this help to prevent hearing damage, but you'll be able to hear everything the band is playing better, too.

Turn the volume down - If you're listening to music through earphones or headphones with the volume up to max for extended lengths of time, you might be too lost in the music to think about the long term effects on your hearing. Try turning the volume down, even by just a bit, it won't blow your earphones and could prevent damage to you.

Choose the right headphones - Whether you're using headphones in the studio or in live situations, try a noise-cancelling pair. These will block out external noise and prevent sound from leaking out, letting you listen better at lower, safer volumes.

There is no cure for tinnitus, so if you're exposed to loud sounds when you play or go to gigs, it's important to look after your hearing by using these easy methods.
