Traditional folk music instruments to be played and discussed at event
Traditional music instruments native to the British Isles will be the focal topic at the Belfast Historical Society meeting at the Belfast Free Library on 25th July.
Tom Seymour, a local musician and author, will present a unique music performance using the traditional music instruments and then lead a discussion, reported Village Soup.
The programme is free and open to all music enthusiasts.
Some of the music instruments that Mr Seymour will perform with include the uilleann (Irish) pipes, a pipe, a tabor and a penny whistle. He will then open up the discussion to the audience.
Belfast, which is the capital of Northern Ireland, was settled by Scottish-Irish families in 1770 and it is believed they carried with them the music and instruments from Britain.
Uilleann pipes are similar to Scottish bagpipes and are the national bagpipe of Ireland. In comparison to other bagpipes, they have a sweet tone and a range of notes.
The penny whistle, which is also known as a tin whistle, is a wind instrument that is often synonymous with Celtic and Irish music.
A tabor is a snare drum that is easily portable. It is played with one hand and has a pitch range of about one octave.
