U2 'made £72m last year'
U2 have been named as the highest-earning band of 2009, ahead of electric guitar player Bruce Springsteen and solo artist Madonna.
According to Billboard Magazine, the Irish group made $108.6 million (£72.2 million) in 2009 thanks to their ongoing world tour, which is reported to be the highest-grossing in history.
"By even the most conservative estimates, U2 were far and away the top revenue generator in music last year," the magazine stated.
The band were far ahead of Springsteen, who was in second place with estimated earnings of $57.6 million.
Billboard said the American electric guitar legend made his millions last year on the basis of a new album, a greatest hits compilation and an extensive touring schedule.
Other artists featured in the top ten included AC/DC, Coldplay and Metallica, as well as Pink and Britney Spears.
U2 are set for another successful and financially-lucrative year in 2010, with their planned tour dates including a headline slot at Glastonbury Festival this summer.Posted on 1 Mar 2010 12:47 to category : Band / Celebrity News
