US discussing 'passports' for musical instruments

The US has put forward proposals to issue passports for musical instruments to prevent them from being confiscated during travelling.

The US is considering implementing a new regime that would see musical instruments being issued with passports.

Delegates attending a global biodiversity conference in Bangkok, Thailand are debating the proposals, which it hopes will streamline international customs checks for travellers that legally contain endangered wildlife products such as exotic hardwoods, ivory or tortoise shells.

According to Associated Press, the goal of the new measures is not to make the lives of musicians harder, but to do away with import and export permits and to ensure legal instruments are not confiscated.

US Fish and Wildlife Service director Dan Ashe, explained that travellers would be able to carry a "musical instrument passport" valid for three years.

Mr Ashe added that violin bows are a major concern for travellers, as some are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, which makes the confiscation of them a serious issue for violinists.

"What we want to do is make sure people can comply with the law, and do so easily. So we came up with this idea of the musical instrument passport that would allow people to have one document to move through multiple countries."
