US professor up for a Grammy
Professor Richard Savino, who teaches the enviably subject History of Rock and Roll at California State University Sacramento (CSUS), has been nominated in the small ensemble recording category for The Kingdom of Castsille.
Prof Savino, who has taught at CSUS since 1985, has been a master of the classical guitar for most of his life, learning his trade from Andres Segovia and Eliot Fisk.
Speaking to the Sacramento Bee, Mr Fisk said: "Richie is unique because he basically locked himself in a room and taught himself.
"He sought me out for a few classical guitar lessons at the start of his career, and I knew right from the start he was an absolutely unique musician."
Prof Savino's first instrument was actually the trumpet but found that it didn't quite fit in with his style as a musician.
It was hearing The Beatles for the first time – on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 – that he knew he wanted to be a guitarist.
"This changed my life – much to my father's chagrin," he told the online news provider.
Paul McCartney recently said he finds it hard to believe he was one of the Fab Four.
