Underworld wrote 'Born Slippy' as a cry for help from alcoholism.

The pioneering electronic dance band became a household name in 1995 when they released the club track - which features the refrain "lager, Lager, lager, lager, shouting" - but founding member Karl Hyde has revealed the lyrics were actually a response to his problems with drinking, rather than an anthem for nights in discos.

He told thevine.com.au: "It was a cry for help. It was a very veiled and obviously unsuccessful cry for help. But it was certainly towards the end of a period of time where I was trying to write lyrics which described the agony that I was in."

Karl - who makes up the band with Rick Smith - added that it was a weird feeling performing 'Born Slippy' and being faced with large groups of drunk clubbers every night.

He added: "it was a bit of a shock. I think only on one show when it happened, it disturbed me at the time because I was right in the middle of all the horror, I hadn't stopped drinking.

"But then almost immediately people got it and they understood and it then became an anthem for happiness and joy and celebration, so now 99.9 per cent of the audience are raising their hands in the air and smiling through just joy."

Underworld's eighth album, 'Barking', is available now.
