Valerie Vaz: All primary schools should have a piano

MP Valerie Vaz believes that every primary school in England should have a piano.

MP Valerie Vaz believes so much in the value of education that she insists that every primary school should have a piano.

Ms Vaz, MP for Walsall South, was speaking during a bout of education questions in the House of Commons.

Speaking directly to Michael Gove, education secretary, the Labour MP pointed out Plato's classic theory of education – that music training is vital in wider education.

"Is he also aware of the Institute of Education's research which found that one in nine primary schools don't have a piano? So could he ensure that he takes steps to ensure that all the primary schools have a musical coordinator and more importantly, a piano?"

In response to this question, Gove said that the coalition government was already working on transforming music education in terms of delivery and funding, with a report on the matter due for publication soon.

He explained that this looks at what can be done to encourage more children and young people to pick up and learn instruments and sing.

"She's absolutely right that the wider provision not just of trained music teachers, but also of musical instruments, will ensure not just that more children have access to the greatest of all art forms, but also that more children as a result do better in every other subject as well," he concluded.
