Vampire Weekend hope to change critical views

New York-based band Vampire Weekend hope their latest musical offering 'Contra' will change many critics' opinions of them.
Great deals on musical instruments

Vampire Weekend hope their latest album will see critics change their opinion of them.

The New York-based band revealed that their album 'Contra' has a different feel to previous offerings.

The band's bassist Chris Baio said: "All the early reviews said that we went to Columbia and we were interested in African music.

"Then everything had to reference those two things in some way. I hope this record will make it more difficult to reduce us to two descriptors.

Band member Ezra Koenig also hit out at their being named the "whitest" band by the book Stuff White People Like by Christian Lander.

He told Time Out Dubai: "He's pointing out that self-conscious multiculturalism. My sense of multiculturalism is more incidental. I looked at the book in a store. It's really just not funny."

In January, Koenig insisted he was annoyed at suggestions the band were too clever.

He said: "I got financial aid so I could go to Columbia and it's natural for me to assume you can be educated and not have a lot of money.

"Unfortunately it's also been natural for some people to think that just because we wrote a song called 'Mansard Roof' we must be rich, spoiled and completely out of touch."
