Vampire Weekend not proud of sales

Vampire Weekend claim it was down to ''luck'' that their LP 'Contra' topped the US album charts and think it would be ''shallow'' to be proud of their achievements.
Great deals on musical instruments

Vampire Weekend don't care about having a chart-topping album.

The group insist it would be "shallow" to get excited about the success of 'Contra' - which recently went to number one in the US album charts - because it is all down to luck.

Frontman Ezra Koenig said: "It's exciting, but you're number one for a week and then you're not.

"Even with a number one there's still plenty of people who've never heard of you. There's so much to do. To be number one versus number three or number five, that's the luck of the draw.

"Our day-to-day has changed so little. It's not like now the glitz and glamour surrounds us."

His bandmate, keyboardist and guitarist Rostam Batmanglij added: "The meaningful accomplishments are internal. It's shallow to be proud of how many records you've sold."

The group are so unimpressed by their achievements, they barely celebrated when they reached number one with 'Contra'.

When asked how he reacted to the news, Ezra told NME magazine: "I woke up from a nap and saw it on an email and went back to sleep. Then later on in the night we did a toast. We had some fun but nothing too crazy."
