Violin to be made from 'Sherlock Holmes tree'
A violin is to be fashioned from a tree that used to be a favourite of Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Sir Arthur used to enjoy the sycamore, situated at Liberton Bank House, when a schoolboy in Edinburgh.
But due to rotting roots, the tree has now had to be cut down and a musical tribute is to be made from it in the author's memory.
Steve Burnett has been commissioned to create the £1,800 violin, which it is hoped will be ready in time to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sir Arthur's birth in May.
Violins played a prominent part in the Sherlock Holmes novels, with Holmes regularly playing the instrument when mulling over investigations.
Indeed, his exploits on the instrument are so well-known that Mr Burnett told the Scotsman that he will be one of the first people many will think of when asked to name a famous violinist.
Robert Downey Jr is set to play the famous detective on the big screen later this year.Posted on 19 Jan 2009 15:34 to category : Instruments News
