Wade Mainer, banjo wizard, has died
He invented the two-finger style banjo picking style that eventuall led to a notable era of bluegrass music.
A popular musician, Mainer was one of the most influential figures in early country music. Testament to his talent and respect in the industry, he made recordings for all the major record labels in the first half of the 20th century.
The well-known country and bluegrass musician Ricky Skaggs told the Associated Press: "Wade Mainer is the last of the old guard from the 20s and '30s to pass on. Mainer's Mountaineers was a huge group during that time.
"They influenced the Monroe Brothers, The Delmore Brothers, The Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs, Reno and Smiley and countless other music groups from the South."
He added that because his dad was such a fan of Mainer, his music was always playing in the house.
Music historian Dick Spottswood, who wrote Banjo on the mountain: The First 100 years of Wade Mainer, described him as the spiritual ancestor of today's old time music.
He is survived by his wife Julia, his four children and their families.
