Warren Haynes' instrument choices explained
Top electric guitar player Warren Haynes has explained why he elects to use different equipment when playing in each of his three bands - The Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule and The Dead.
The rock and blues musician, who ranked 23rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, suggested to Gibson's Ted Drozdowski that the different styles of the bands necessitates the use of different instruments.
For example, when playing with The Dead this year, Haynes has not yet picked up a Gibson Les Paul, despite being so closely associated with the instrument that he has his own signature model.
"If I walked on-stage with The Dead with the same sound I use with the Allman Brothers, it'd be inappropriate," he remarked, referring to how the band pays homage to Jerry Garcia.
Instead he uses an SG, a 1961 ES-335 and a Firebird featuring two mini-humbuckers that Gibson recently built for him.
