Willie Dixon commended by Gibson
Speaking shortly after what would have been his 94th birthday, Gibson described Dixon as possibly the greatest songwriter in the history of the blues genre.
The company said his work influenced many other electric guitar greats throughout the 20th century, many of whom emulated his style and covered his songs.
For instance, the classic Hoochie Coochie Man has been recorded by everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Steve Miller.
Gibson added that Led Zeppelin's version of Bring It On Home, which appeared on their second album, was particularly memorable.
The "firestorm rendition" performed by Jimmy Page on his Gibson Les Paul at Zeppelin's famous Royal Albert Hall concert in 1970 was also singled out for praise.
"Today, recordings of Dixon tunes are still inspiring new generations," Gibson added.
Etta James' recording of I Just Want to Make Love to You is perhaps one of the best known Willie Dixon covers, with legendary bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds also producing their own versions.Posted on 16 Jul 2009 10:45 to category : Band / Celebrity News
