Electric guitar players and drummers who want to make a name for themselves in the music business have been urged to use the internet to their advantage.

According to Greg Kane of the Scottish Music Industry Association, the internet offers a number of promotional opportunities for unsigned bands.

He has therefore encouraged artists to make sure they are registered on sites such as YouTube, as well as social media including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

Mr Kane told the Skinny that the profile of these sites could also be raised significantly if bands gig regularly and gather email addresses from the attending crowds.

These could then be used to build a mailing list, allowing people to keep up to date with the band's latest activities.

Mr Kane added that gigs would also provide an ideal opportunity to produce new content for their online outlets.

"Drive fans to your websites by developing video and audio content and making the best of it available on your websites," he advised.

This comes after the recent launch of the MySpace Artist Dashboard, which allows musicians registered on the site to access data such as the geographical spread of their fanbase.
