Yamaha has offered its support to a competition aimed at encouraging the talent of young piano players.

The musical instrument manufacturer has helped with the promotion of the second Piano Competition for Young Pianists, which was run in conjunction with Manchester-based music school Chetham's.

There were more than 30 entrants into the competition, which had three different age categories and offered contestants the chance to show off their skills on a Yamaha concert grand piano.

Kumi Liley, manager of Yamaha artist services for London and a member of the judging panel, said: "We experienced some real virtuosity and some incredibly commanding and sensitive performances throughout the day [and] our youngest entrant was only ten years old."

Earlier this year, the Yamaha Artist Centre in London played host to a special charity concert by piano player Noriko Ogawa.

She gave a recital at the venue on May 27th 2010 to raise funds for the Autistic Society.
