Yamaha sign Rudresh Mahanthappa
Mahanthappa, who was born in Italy but is based in New York, is considered one of the foremost saxophonists of his generation, and the signing is a scoop for Yamaha.
He particularly likes using his YAS-62 Alto Sax to 'belt out' tunes, whether that's improvisational skits or as part of a band.
In fact, he has been with this particular type of saxophone ever since his dad bought him it when he was in high school. By that point he was already showing the talent needed to be a great musician.
"It was the top of the line horn of that time period," he said. "It just resonated in a way that other horns didn't and it was agile enough to let me create sounds in new and excitingly different ways."
Three decades on, the instrument never leaves his side and is still in great working condition.
During that time, Mahanthappa has dedicated his life to the instrument, researching, jamming and exploring new concepts.
This eventually led him to explore his Indian background, leading to several trips to India to "soak up" the music of his ancestors.
