Young adults taking up musical instruments
A high percentage of young people in the UK are learning to play musical instruments or want to begin playing, according to one expert.
In an open letter to the Guardian, Deborah Annetts, the chief executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, noted that while a recent Readers Digest poll found that many people have little knowledge of classical music, 60 per cent said they enjoyed listening to it.
Rejecting the view that listening to such performances is "elitist", she explained that a survey that her organisation carried out found that 30 per cent of young adults aged 18-25 years old were learning to play a musical instrument or sing.
A further 40 per cent who were not currently practising an instrument said that they would like to learn at some point, a form of education which Ms Annetts called "inspiring and accessible, as well as promoting progression and excellence".
Those interested in writing their own songs could be influenced into learning to play the acoustic guitar after the Alt Sounds website noted it was the starting point for many songwriters.
