Three young piano players have received £2,000 apiece after being named as the most impressive performers at the final of the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship Awards.

Mihkel Poll, Ji Liu and Qiaojing Dai were selected to receive the money after performing at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance earlier this month.

The scholarships are intended to help to support the development of their future classical music careers.

Qiaojing Dai was also selected for another special accolade - being invited to perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No 15 with the Milton Keynes City Orchestra in May.

Bill Martin, education liaison manager at Yamaha Music Europe, said all ten of the youngsters who made it through to the final could be proud of their performances.

"Each year the standard seems to improve and this year has been no exception. We received so many excellent entries and all the finalists were quite outstanding," he stated.

The Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe has provided more than 850 scholarships to talented young musicians since being established in 1989.

Among those to go on to professional careers following the award are saxophonist Amy Dickson and euphonium player David Childs.
