Children must be encouraged to learn to play musical instruments at school, according to teacher-turned-rock star Sting.

br /> The musician, who rose to fame as frontman and bass guitarist in The Police, said it is "vitally important" that young people are exposed to music, BBC News reports

Speaking at the Hay festival, he commented: "Give them the opportunity to play instruments."

Sting, who recently participated in a reunion tour with his old band, added that the still finds the process of writing a song something of an enigma.

"It's still a mystery to me, the whole idea of how you write songs," he remarked.

This, he said, was unusual as he has been writing songs - such as the hits Every Breath You Take, Roxanne and Don't Stand So Close To Me - all his life.

Sting has also enjoyed a successful solo career since the 1980s, which has included collaborations with Mary J Blige, Anoushka Shankar and Craig David.
