Zep star's Les Paul solo earns praise
Legendary guitarist Jimmy Page has continued to rack up plaudits for a landmark 1969 solo, which has been named as one of the greatest in the history of rock music by equipment manufacturer Gibson.
Page's turn on Heartbreaker - which first appeared on the Led Zeppelin II album and became a live favourite for the rest of the band's career - was placed 27th out of 50 different solos in a recent article on the firm's website.
"Heartbreaker shows Page at his inspirational best - sucking every tone possible out of his Les Paul, switching between majors and minors and giving a masterclass in rapid-fire hammer-ons," writer Andrew Vaughan explained.
The solo came one place below Prince's performance on the title track of his 1984 album Purple Rain, while Jimi Hendrix's feedback-laced routine on 1970's Machine Gun was 29th.
In a recent entry on his Gibson.com blog, guitarist Rik Emmett claimed that impeccable timing is crucial for any would-be guitar hero.Posted on 22 Sep 2010 20:00 to category : Band / Celebrity News
