sE Electronics Share My Morning Jacket's Touring Secrets
Ryan Pickett has been working with them for over a decade, and he's been using sE Electronics VR1 Voodoo Ribbon Mic and sE Reflexion Filters in their touring set up. Pickett also used sE Electronics equipment to record My Morning Jacket's frontman Jim James as he undertook his solo project.
For the live sound, the band use a pair of VR1 ribbon mics as drum overheads. "The drum sounds become very open and natural," says Pickett. "The cymbals no longer hurt. The VR1's are also low profile enough to allow me to get the right proximity without blocking the audience or drummer's sight lines."
The AmericanaramA tour will take the band across the United States. What made Pickett choose the VR1s to go on tour with? "The sE Electronics Microphones are very robust. That's what really sets them apart from other ribbons. I really like to be able to use studio mics in the live realm without having to worry about ribbon failure."
To record guitars, Pickett uses several IRF2 Filters, getting the idea to place them on the guitar and keyboard amps from Tom Petty's FOH engineer, Robert Scovill, whilst performing with him on a few occasions.
In the studio, Pickett was inspired by another legendary engineer and producer, Glyn Johns, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thanks to his work with The Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, The Who and more recently Ryan Adams. Pickett placed a pair of VR1s in a three-mic arrangement. "We used two VR1s placed equal distance from the snare, one with six inches from the floor tom and another overhead," he explains. "The result sounded very round, warm and 3D."
