Acoustic vs Digital Pianos

Because digital keyboards and pianos rely on sampling, they can produce sounds from different instruments. For example, musicians can choose instruments such as flutes, harpsichords, strings and percussion, making the digital piano or keyboard a very adaptable instrument.

A digital piano offers a weighted key action to mimic the feel of an acoustic instrument. For example, on the Yamaha YDP140 Digital Piano, the lower notes keys have a heavier touch, while the higher ones are lighter.

The Benefits of a Digital Piano

There are a number of advantages to playing the digital piano or a keyboard as opposed to an acoustic version. For example, they may have built-in rhythms to accompany the players. Also, because a digital piano is cordless, it should never be adjusted, which saves you time and money.

A digital piano or keyboard also allows their users to enjoy the MIDI Musical Instrument Digital Interface, which means they can communicate, monitor and synchronize with other electronic musical instruments, computers and equipment. The example of a keyboard with this capability is the M-Audio ProKeys Sono 88 keys.

A digital piano can be relatively portable because it is smaller and lighter than the traditional alternative and can often be partially dismantled to facilitate its transportation. Players can also play silently by plugging the headphones into the instruments.
