Campaign begins to save planned Yamaha music centre
A rehearsal and recording space for musicians in Darlington which had been earmarked as the UK's first Yamaha Music and Technical Skills Centre is fighting a campaign against its potential closure.
The Forum music centre is seeking an unsecured loan of £80,000 from the council funding that would allow it to access a further £110,000 from regional development body One North East.
It wants to use the money to become part of non-profit organisation Humantics, reports the Northern Echo.
Along with the Yamaha music centre, the change would allow the site to act as the regional office of Humantics.
However, the council has said it is "impossible" to meet the wishes of The Forum at the moment, meaning it may have to close its doors in September.
More than 1,000 people have joined a Facebook group protesting against the council's decision.
Yamaha has recently been involved with a musical event in another area of the north of England.Posted on 8 Jul 2010 11:48 to category : Music News
