Croydon musician on the hunt for rare oboe
Dom Kelly of Thornton Heath left the hand-crafted woodwind instrument in the back of a cab on his way home from recording a West End musical.
Speaking to Your Local Guardian, he said: "There are only three other oboes like it in the world. It may sound strange but my instrument is customised to the way I play, so while I will play, I’ll have to borrow one and have only a week to adjust to it."
The oboe in question was made by specialist craftsman Yanko Petrov, who runs Sound Alchemy in Thornton Heath and is known for his musical instruments.
Mr Kelly's oboe can be recognised by its specially-designed bell, which is dimpled like a golf ball inside, and its box which has "Dom" engraved on it.
Mr Petrov told the news provider: "The sound projection, tone, tuning and overall balance of the instrument was totally designed to suit Mr Kelly’s playing style and reeds design."
As part of his hunt, Mr Kelly has handed out a number of leaflets and questioned taxi drivers in his local area.
A reward will be offered to anyone who returns it.
The oboe is a double reed woodwind instrument and dates back to the mind 17th century.
