Guitar students 'should not learn music theory early on'
Guitar teachers have been advised that teaching beginners music theory could put them off learning the instrument.
Speaking to GuitarSite.com, he warned that if students are confronted with musical theory early on, they could find it boring and quickly lose interest.
Furthermore, he stated that if they do not understand the subject at the beginning, they may lose faith in their abilities.
"The primary teaching goal should be to build the student's confidence by getting them to actually do some guitar playing as soon as possible," Mr Hess commented.
Teachers were also encouraged to use methods that would quickly show budding musicians that they have the potential to perform at a high standard.
