Live Music Act Report Predicts Thriving Future for Performers and Venues

A report by UK Music, which represents the interests of the commercial music industry in the UK, has projected the impact of the Live Music Act on musicians and venues.

The Act, passed in March 2012, meant that staging live music is easier for venues all over the UK. Venues with a capacity of 200 (increased to 500 in January 2013) or under no longer need an entertainment licence for the staging of live bands and artists.

The report has estimated that the new rules have allowed 20,400 venues around the country to increase the amount of live music they currently stage. It's also estimated that a further 13,000 venues have been able to start staging live gigs, benefitting as a result of the passing of the deregulatory Act.

Not only is the Live Music Act great for emerging bands developing their live sound, but it has also been good news for venues who rely on musicians to attract customers, such as restaurants and hotels.

General Secretary of the Musician's Union, John Smith, stated " The passing of this Act must be seen as a real achievement for the industry. For many seasoned and accomplished musicians, live performance is the sustenance of their careers".

The law states that to stage live music without a licence from the local authority, performances must only take place between 8am and 11pm, to audiences of no more than 500 people. The report found that a large percentage (78%) of smaller venues were unaware that they can now stage live music without an entertainment licence, but that overall all types of venue intend to increase their provision of live music.

Steve Levine, Record Producer and Chairman of the Music Producers' Guild has said it's an 'essential' and 'very exciting' development. "The impact of this Act will be huge, with venues increasing their provision of live music more musicians will gain valuable experience, perfecting their craft."
