Macy Gray makes art
Macy Gray believes her music is "an art".
The 42-year-old singer - who first shot to fame with her single 'I Try' - says she doesn't mind having less success on a commercial scale as she's so proud of the songs she's made.
Speaking to Stylist magazine she said: "I like people who do art for the sake of art. Actors have the luxury of making a big movie and then they'll do a little independent film. In music, it's almost like a crime if you do something less successful. Record labels are short-sighted. They want to make money and they make that clear. I want to make money too, but my work is also an art."
Macy says she uses past experiences to write songs as they give her so much inspiration.
She continued to Stylist: "All my close relationships have been a huge influence on who I am and what I do every day. I give my whole self to a relationship, so they have always had a huge impact on my life. I've always practised the idea of writing what you know. When you write what you know, stuff comes out really naturally."
Earlier this year, the hitmaker revealed that she got into singing because of an ex-boyfriend.
She said: "I got started because of a crush. I had a boyfriend in college who was in a jazz band and had a little studio in his room. We started writing songs together; I didn't know if I had a good voice, I just wanted to hang around him."Posted on 1 Jul 2010 07:00 to category : Music News
