Music instruments from around the world explored
A new workshop will seek to explore the impact of music instruments from around the world on the culture of their country of origin.
The World Beat Workshop will use a variety of music instruments like the Turkish doumbeks, Indian ragas, Australian didgeridoos and African drums to look at how these unique instruments impact on and shape the people that engage with them and how that effects their sense of community and identity.
Led by Justin Kerswill, the workshop, which is aimed at children aged between ten and 13, is split into two distinct sessions, reported YorkRegion.com.
The first sees Mr Kerswill, a largely self-taught multi-instrumentalist, take the lead by providing participants with historical and geographical knowledge specific to each of the music instruments.
The second session involves participants actually getting their hands on the instruments, giving them a flavor of the distinct sounds that each of them produces.
Speaking to the online news provider, Mr Kerswill said: "It's a little bit like a petting zoo with instruments.
"It's a hands-on interactive jam. It sparks people’s creativity and leadership as well."
The didgeridoo is a popular wind instrument that was developed by indigenous Australians over 1,500 years ago.
