Musicians 'should learn to play more than one instrument'

Playing more than one instrument is a good idea for musicians, a prolific composer has said.

Composer and piano player Boguslaw Schaeffer has recommended that musicians learn to play more than one instrument if possible.

Schaeffer, who has written more than 500 musical compositions and has just finished a run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, told the Herald the first musical instrument he played as a child was the violin.

He has since gone on to learn others and said that it is important for musicians to be multi-talented.

"Musicians who only play one instrument are limiting themselves because they don't understand the full possibilities that can be opened up," the composer stated.

Earlier this month, a survey conducted by Casio Music revealed that many people regret not having learned to play the piano.

It found that 68 per cent of those it questioned for the study who had not learned the musical instrument wished they had been given the opportunity to do so, reported MI-Pro.
