Woman becomes first Scottish person to be convicted of illegal music file sharing
A woman who illegally downloaded up to 30,000 music files has become the first person in Scotland to be convicted of unlawful file sharing.
Anne Muir, 58, pleaded guilty to downloading and distributing copyrighted music that were collectively worth £54,000.
She was arrested in 2008 after an investigation instigated by the BPI (British Recorded Music Industry) and the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) identified unusual activity coming from her computer. When police raided her home they found 7493 digital music files and 24,243 karaoke files.
Lorenzo Alonzi, her defence lawyer, said that Ms Muir, who is a nurse, had not been downloading the music to make money but to build up her self-esteem after suffering from depression.
He said: "Mrs Muir was not in any way trying to distribute on a large scale, she had a very big quantity of these files because she was hoarding - a symptom of a severe obsessive personality disorder that she suffers from."
Despite the popularity of music sites like iTunes illegal music downloading is still a huge problem.
According to BPI, 7.7 million had illegally pirated music last year costing the music industry £219 million.
